Do translators get to choose what series they work on?
– While a translator is welcome to request a title they’re interested in, assignments are offered based on availability and whether a translator’s personal style and experience complements a title. Our editors present assignments to translators based on these factors, and then it is up to them to accept.  Translators who take on a series are typically automatically assigned each volume in the series until its completion.

I sent you an email but haven’t heard back!!
– Due to volume, and our publishing schedule demands, we may not be able to respond to all submissions in a timely manner. However, all submissions are kept on file for review when we assign new titles, and you may feel free to contact us again to update us on any new or improved skills since you last sent a submission.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What do you look for in a submission, or when looking at a lettering test?
– Good cleanup (any Japanese text that is removed is fully removed, and any retouch isn’t noticeable from the original art), good sound effects (that they either replace the original text, or the translation compliments the Japanese characters as per our House Style), text flow (that dialogue fits neatly within its bubble, and is centered, without looking off-balance or otherwise distracting from the artwork). Additionally, lettered text should match the provided script, if working from our lettering test.

Do letterers get to choose what series they work on?
– While a letterer is welcome to request a title they’re interested in, series are assigned based on a letterer’s availability and whether their personal lettering style compliments a title. Our Production Manager offers title(s) to a letterer based on these factors, and it’s up to a letterer to accept the title.
